The French and Portuguese explorers of the 15th and 16th centuries divided the West Coast of Africa into five Coasts, reflecting the different economies of the regions. The Ivory Coast was aptly name the Côte d'Ivoire by the French and Costa do Marfim by the Portuguese as both mean “Ivory Coast”. This was because the major trade that had developed in the region was the export of Ivory. The Ivory Coast today produces one third of the World’s Cocoa crop and is the World’s largest exporter.
